About the Photo
This photo of virga, a natural phenomenon, I took in Tavan Bogt Mountains of Mongolian Altai region that borders Russia and China. The photo was featured as Editors’ Choice and also The Best photos of the Day by National Geographic Russia website. Virga is a rain or snow that evaporates before reaching the ground. It is produced when precipitation falls from high clouds into extremely dry air. As the liquid raindrops or ice crystals hit the warm, dry air they are transformed straight into water vapor.
