The World In Faces. Copyright Issue.

An article about The World In Faces and its author Alexander Khimushin was published today by 3Mad, a news aggregator from India, both on their website (below) and a Facebook page. However, 3Mad decided to put their own website logo on every photo of Alexander Khimushin without any permission from the author. When they were approached regarding this issue instead of removing their logo from the photos (and that’s what we asked them to do) they chose to remove the article about the project all together. Similar stories happened to Alexander’s photos in the past too. It is not acceptable that some people think it is perfectly fine to use someones work for their own benefit without any consideration of copyright law. Every time we will fight against it and make it clear that it’s not OK. The World In Faces is now officially copyrighted project and this behavior will not be tolerated.

In 2016 Alexander has been living on the road 10 months out of 12 and the journey was really tough. The last six months he was driving an SUV alone, to the most remote places across Siberia. Alexander covered more than 15K miles behind the wheel and managed to visit all ethnic minorities living from Sakhalin Island in The Pacific coast of Russia to Yakutia, the coldest region on this planet and Buryatia, where nomads live in yurts in the endless steppes bordering Mongolia. Many of these ethnic minorities are  largely unknown not only to the outside world, but also within the country. Alexander now plans to organize a series of grand exhibitions in Moscow, New York and Los Angeles that will display his outstanding collection of portraits. Alexander Khimushin from The World In Faces project travels alone for half a year across the most remote corners of Siberia to take portraits of ethnic minorities, including Evenki.

To take portrait of real Evenki reindeer herders I had to travel deep into the middle of nowhere in Siberia! The story is already almost legendary by now! At first there was a grader dirt road, that was built some years ago by artisan gold miners. After that, at some point I a usual took a turn to a “taiga “road”, a forest glade. As the saying goes, he further you get, the harder the going. My SUV turned into an icebreaker, as I had to cross about ten frozen streams and rivers. Could not do it on the speed, thin ice was constantly breaking down and the car each time was sinking into the water, a ditch or into a swamp, where every time there was a chance to get stuck. If I had to go for help, there’s no one for many kilometers around. At the next crossing ice floes broke the front bumper, it’s deformed and went deep, wheels were rubbing it and could not rotate properly. I coulnot bend the bumper back at the site. Fortunately, tired of waiting for me to come, the herders came to look for me, they arrived on an old Russian military grade SUV – UAZ. I had to leave the car in the forest and continue the journey with them. A couple of times, UAZ stuck right in the middle of the river, with stopped engine. reindeer man were jumping in waist-long rubber boots in the icecold water, throwing bouldes to break the ice. But even our legendary UAZ could not overpower the last river crossing. The last part of the way up to the tents in which they live in taiga, we were walking by the river on thin ice. And, finally, through the middle of the river, still unfrozen, my photo equipment first, and then myself, were transferred on the shoulders of the herdes. That is how I got there!

The World In Faces goes viral

The World In Faces goes viral on Boredpanda.com. It’s one of a kind international community, where people can submit stories about themselves and what they do. I never did it before, but following an advise of a friend, I decided to give it a try in order to get exposure for The World In Faces.  On May 4th 2016 I submitted a story about the project and just within a few hours received a message from the site staff. While there are hundreds of submissions from all over the world, my story was trending.  I did not expect so much positive  feedback from people all over the world. It’s really overwhelming. I definitely want to continue the project as I see that it touches souls of many people. Let’s make the world a better place together! Thank you all for your support. It means a lot to me!

Welcome to the website

It’s been quite a bit of work to put it all together, even though it doesn’t look like much.  Everybody these days use social networks, so it’s questionable if we need personal websites anymore. My old website was totally crushed by a hacker attack almost 6 months ago and I had neither time nor ability to restore it. The main reason I decided to build a new one from scratch is The World in Faces project.

During 2014-2015 My Planet TV (Russia) website published over 200 of the project photos that received a lot of positive feedback from Russian people. However, it appeared that local media are so isolated by a language barrier that even a simple Google Search in English did not bring me any result on my projects. I realised that I self-isolated my project too. Now I feel that I should’ve gone international long ago. Coming back from 3-month-long trip I have a bit of time to give it a try. I hope that The World In Faces can be interesting to much wider international community.

While this website features some photos, there are much more portraits that haven’t been published anywhere. I will start adding one portrait a day on newly created instagram and facebook pages listed below.
